Animation is a technique for creating the illusion of movement in a sequence by photographing successive drawings, models, or even puppets. Because our eyes can only hold a picture for about a tenth of a second, the brain combines numerous images into a single moving image when they emerge in rapid succession. Pictures are drawn or painted on clear celluloid sheets to be captured in conventional animation. Early cartoons are examples of this, but nowadays, the majority of animated films are created using computer-generated imagery (CGI).
